The tourist in Cathedral Square was looking for a rental car. He knew there were rental cars in Christchurch because The Lonely Planet had told him. So he walked just a few blocks in the directin of the Port Hillls and there he found what he was lokoing for. Affordable rental cars in a friendly agency. He signed up and drove off. His tour of ther South Island was going to include Queenstown and Milford Sound. On his return he wanted to leave the hire car at the airport and that was not a problem. So he left knowing that his guide book was right — there were affordable cars for rent in Christchurch.
