Creating my family tree

I am really interested in genealogy, and would really like to find out more about my ancestors. I have a written family tree that my grandmother made, and this goes back a few generations. Is there a way to use genealogy DNA testing to find out more of my family tree from farther back? We don’t have a common last name, and there is another family we know of with the same last name, so I am wondering if somewhere way back we might be related. Is there any way to find this out? I would really love to know more.
