Is it Difficult to Make Your Own Soap?

I am trying to find out more about soap making. I was thinking it might be interesting to try to do this myself since I tend to like the high end soaps that are very expensive, and I have heard that you can make your own soap with very good results. I am just worried that this might be a bit difficult for me since I have never really done anything like this. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to do this? I am hoping that it is something I could easily manage with the right instructions to follow.
