Irish Castles

By admin | May 13, 2008

There are hundreds of castles to visit in Ireland. Structures including castles, stone towers and fortifications dot the Irish landscape. Irish castles were not elaborate, elegant homes of royalty but instead were built as protective fortifications for royal families against enemies. Many of these castles, it turns out, were built small and with few windows. The main functions were to keep out invaders and to keep as warm as possible in the cold, damp Irish climate. There were, however, many larger and ornate stone castles throughout Ireland that have been renovated and turned into homes or hotels. A wonderful way to tour Ireland is to seek out castles. There are many documented locations, fifty plus in County Dublin alone. View one, Ashtown Castle, in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Follow up a sightseeing filled day with dinner and luxury at Westbury Hotel in Dublin, located in the center of Dublin’s theater district.
