Luxury Amsterdam Hotels

I am looking for luxury Amsterdam hotels that are not tourist traps. So far, everything I have found caters to tourists, movie stars, and royalty. And although I would not mind being treated like a king, I would prefer to stay somewhere more secluded that allows me to experience the real life of the city. I don’t want to stay too far outside of the city, but I would be willing to compromise on distance if the atmosphere was right. I am debating whether to hire a travel agent or simply look for luxury hotels online. I wish I knew someone who had been there so I could get their opinion.
