Religion and topics of conversations

By admin | April 14, 2008

Within my life there has been one ethical element that continually seems to re-assert itself and is a constant topic of conversation at the magic shop.  Religion, a topic of opinion and discussion worldwide, seems to grant each person I encounter with and unique perspective on its importance and relevance in today’s society.  Perhaps the best way to relate my feelings concerning religion and ethics is by describing the relationship I carried on with my friend, a Mormon, throughout my last years of high school.  Our relationship had always been difficult, as I am what is typically referred to as a borderline agnostic and she had always been taught to carry a deep love for her religion and question those who did not subscribe to her faith.

It was clear from the very beginning that neither of us were going to change and religion was a subject best left for another day.  However, the topic did come up on several occasions throughout our relationship and we both seemed to approach it with a mutual understanding that our opinions could be allowed to differ and were expected to do so.  I respected the fact that she embraced her religion and still welcomed a relationship with myself, despite protest from her fellow church members and parts of her family.
