Lining both walls was a single row of skulls, beginning at the entrance and feeding into a central shrine at the far end. Its sculpted body had scales covering its forearms and back, and its taloned paws grasped two lifelike severed heads, whose eyes were closed in death. And from the gaping mouth of the beast, a human limb protruded. As the commanders crowded into the temple, Divicos turned toward the beast, communing with its spirit. Hunched over, he seemed absorbed by the shrine, and the darkness surrounding it.
