The Problem With GPS When Hiking
By admin | April 23, 2008
For anyone who has wandered off the trail and found themselves lost in the middle of nowhere trying desperately to find their way back onto their track with a map and compass, the arrival of gps was more than welcome. However, the problem with gps when hiking is that it doesn’t always work very well. A gps system relies on both a base station (normally a hand-help unit when hiking) and a network of satellites circling the earth and, most importantly, on the signals that are sent between the base station and the satellites. In most cases this presents no difficulty, but both terrain and atmospheric conditions can either lead to inaccuracies in the reading received or indeed to no reading appearing at all. The arrival of gps has indeed been a good thing for hikers, but the old map and compass are not quite dead yet.
