Would iPod car charger work with the apple iPhone?

I would like to buy a car charger for my iPhone 1st gen but i am not sure the iPod Car Charger will any car charger for an iPod work with the iPhone? since the iphone first gen is a mobile phone i would assume that it would require alot more voltage in order to charge. Since the ipod car charger are pretty cheap these days. so i thought it might be possible to do so and the dock connection from the ipod and iphone are virtually the same thing.. of course i dont want to fry my iphone. Thanks for any info!!
